Family Therapy
Children live within the context of a family, so naturally, when we work with children, we work with their family members. We see the family members as the resource who is there, continuing the therapy for the rest of the days of the week. In family therapy, we work through four stages: Assessment, Preparation, Structure, and Attachment.

Four Stages of Family Therapy
|
In the Assessment phase, we meet with parents and kids to learn about the difficulties they're having, the strengths and resources they each bring, and come up with a plan for helping create change. Next, In the Preparation phase, we meet with parents to get a history of the problem, and the conceptualization of the problem (e.g., what anxiety is and how it is maintained in children) and a treatment plan of how to help their child overcome the problem. During this phase, we meet with the child to get to know them better, and begin helping them with skills to deal with the emotional difficulties that they may be having. This may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy skills. We then have a session with kids and parents to teach the parents the CBT skills, and how to reinforce them at home. In the Structure phase, we help parents manage problematic behaviors, and reinforce behaviors we want to see more of. This allows us to manage acting out, aggression, tantrums, etc. Finally, we do Attachment work, which helps the kids express what they're struggling with in order to get the help and support they need, rather than acting it out. We teach parents play and art techniques to help access their children's emotions slowly ridding the need of a licensed therapist.
Our therapists work with families to help figure out what is going on and how to make things better. They create a good connection with children, and help parents to learn the skills and strengthen their connection with their children to work through problems. Parents are the greatest resource that children have, so let us help you help your child! |
